The Players is always a great event and Pete Dyeís Stadium course is a fitting venue that doesnít disappoint. Every year this course throws up drama and none more so than the 17th, plenty has been said about this hole, but there is a true replica at Eagles Eye golf club in Michigan that you can play if you canít make it to Sawgrass.

The Players now offers the highest prize fund in golf at a staggering $9.5 million with the winner taking a $1.71 million cut of that. The tournament used to be a warm up to the Masters and played in March, but with the move to May as a lead up to the US Open, the course now plays very differently and is much dryer, harder and faster.

In 2006 the course implemented massive changes, they tore up the old course and then brought in 26,600 tons of sand, 2.6 million square feet of Bermuda grass, 116,600 feet of pipe for irrigation, 19 acres of sod for landscaping, 200 new trees made up of oaks, pines and palms, new natural waste areas, lower-level bunkers, greenside chipping areas and water hazards. From a spectators point of view it makes great viewing, the changes are seen as a positive move by both the players and the tour.

My tips to win:

2004 Players champion Adam Scott 18/1, likes a break between events and hasnít played since his Masters win back in April. The Australian has never been someone who plays week in week out and only has The Players and The Memorial tournament penciled in for this month. Adam seems to have the knack of being able to be combat-ready when he tees it up and three Top 10 finishes including his Masters victory from five tournaments entered is proof enough that he can turn up and turn it on.

When Phil Mickelson 22/1 won the Players Championship back in 2007 strangely enough he was placed third the week before at Quall Hollow and anyone who watched Mickelson scramble and putt his way up the leaderboard for the first three days at Quall last week will know if he can start to hit some fairways, he will be challenging again this week. Phil did say in his post round interview that he would be using 3-wood from the tees and if he sticks to that stratergy, I think Mickelson will have a great chance of adding to his only Players Championship win.

I am going to stick with Lee Westwood 25/1 this week, his Top 5 finish at last weeks Wells Fargo Championship showed his ball striking skills were up to their usual standard, but his Achilles heel was again there for all to see. Whether this was partly down to the state of the greens we shall see, but you can be sure Lee will be challenging again this week and maybe all that short game practice will have a pay off.

My each-way tips:

Its hard to ignore the streak that Billy Horschel 40/1 is currently on, he has not been outside the Top 10 in his last four tournaments, which has included a win and two other Top 5 finishes. Horschel was born in Florida and lives just down the road from Sawgrass at Jacksonville Beach. Billy was on the University of Florida Gaters golf team, knows the course very well and will have plenty of support. Whoís to say he canít produce back-to-back wins.

It would seem Bo Van Pelt 50/1 has a bit of a love-hate relationship with Sawgrass and The Players Championship, Van Pelt ether misses the cut or makes the Top 10. Since 2005 Bo has missed the cut five times and made the Top 10 three times, but the last time he had a Top 10 finish the week before The Players in 2010, he had Top 5 finish at The Players, so I am hoping that holds true again here this week.

My outside tip:

I must admit I was stunned to see Kyle Stanley 90/1 and David Lynn 140/1 this far down the betting odds, especially after both done so well in last weeks Wells Fargo Championship, with Lynn making the play-off and Stanley making his second consecutive Top 10 finish. Both will becoming into this week full of confidence, so its take your pick, a pound each-way on both it will be a nice little profit if they make the money places.

As always good luck
