The Irish Open has had a very traumatic existence, the first Irish Open was played back in 1927 at Portmarnock which was won by the Scotsman George Duncan. Some great names adorn the winner’s list the great South African Bobby Locke also won at Portmarnock back in 1938.

Fred Daly became the first Irishmen to win it a year before his Open Championship back in 1946, who was followed by fellow Irishmen Harry Bradshaw who won it twice in 1947/49. The tournament experienced financial problems, except for a single event, held in 1953, there was a 25-year hiatus until the Irish Open returned in 1975. Ben Crenshaw won it in 1976, followed by fellow American Hubert Green in 1977. Other notable winners are, Seve Ballesteros who won it three times, Bernhard Langer, Nick Faldo, Jose Maria Olazabal, Colin Montgomerie and Sergio Garcia.

Killarney Golf & Fishing Club
sits in the heart of County Kerry and is Ireland’s Largest Golf Resort and the only 54-hole complex in the country. Nestled amidst the splendour of the famous Killarney lakes with the spectacular backdrop of the MacGillycuddy Reeks mountain range. It is unique in that it is the only true ‘lakeside’ golf club in Ireland.

Golf took a leap in popularity in the sixties in no small part to Arnold Palmer which see more people taking up the sport and the TV programme Shell’s “Wonderful World of Golf”, featured Killarney, which well and truly put the club on the map in the United States.

More land was purchased and the Killeen course was built and opened eventually in 1972. This ambitious project, which involved the splitting of the Mahony’s Point course in two and extending the course in both directions was met with huge skepticism but this project was driven home by the sheer determination of Dr Billy O’Sullivan. Many feared that a great course would be lost but instead two fine modern courses with distinctive features were born.

Our Picks to win are: Rory McIlroy 6/1 doesn’t really represent great odds, so we are going to go for Padriag Harrington 20/1 last year’s runner-up and winner in 2007, looks like he is getting his game back together and will relish playing in front of home support.

It’s hard to say where Darren Clarke’s 25/1 head will be after his magnificent win at the Open, but this is a chance to warm up for the USPGA Championship and the Ulsterman will want to do well. Remember the support Darren received when the Ryder Cup was held in Ireland, unlike politics sport unites both North and South, so Darren will enjoy some fantastic support.

Graeme McDowell 20/1 is another Irishmen who will be wanting to play well, after being the catalyst for Rory and Darren, Graeme will want to grab some of the spot light back for himself, so look for him to have a great week.

Our each-way bets are: Robert Rock 40/1, with his maiden win on the tour coming in Italy this year and holding his own in the US Open after having to rushing from Italy to the US to play in that tournament, Robert has the game to go on to become a great player on the European Tour, so look for him to start winning multiple Championships.

Richie Ramsey 40/1 finished 9th here last year and with his fifth place finish three weeks ago at the French Open Richie, is one of many players on the European Tour looking to push on , he has had four other top 20 finishes this season.

Scott Jamieson 50/1 shot himself in the foot in the Nordea Masters last week shooting a final round 76, but still managed to finish just outside the Top 10 in thirteenth place. Scott has had three 3rd place finishes this year and a little consistency will see him challenging more when he tees it up.

Colin Montgomerie 100/1 could also be worth having a couple of quid on, he has won the Irish Open three times in his career and may see this as a chance to show that his game is still up to it, after missing out on playing in The Open.

As always good luck
