I am not sure how many golfers realise how important using the same golf ball is to their golf game and scoring ability. If you are a golfer that regularly changes your ball or you just use what you find or buy the cheapest balls on the market you may not be doing yourself any favours.

If you suddenly change your ball in the middle of a round of golf and wonder why it didn’t fly as far, stop as quick, or react the same as the chip on the previous green chances are it was down to the different constructions of the two balls you used.

I had heard a lot about Bridgestone’s new extra soft golf ball and being able to put it into play over three different courses in Catalunya gave me an insight into what Bridgestone are trying to achieve with this new ball.

Technology:

Having just been fitted for Mizuno’s new JPX850 driver, 3-wood and hybrid I knew my swing speed were right in the Bridgestone Extra Soft ball range at 100.5 mph – with the majority of golfers swinging the club at speeds of less thank 105 mph – Bridgestone have designed their ball so it can achieve maximum compression at those swing speeds, helping you achieve the maximum distance from your tee shots, this is all achieved by using Bridgestone’s low compression soft gradational core.

This core is then combined with the new tour proven 330-dimple design soft Ionomer cover which produces more spin and feel, so you don’t lose any of that bite and control around the green.

Conclusion:

I use a low spinning ball because I have a tendency to come into the ball too steeply which is great around the greens and when firing my second shot to the green, but not so good on my drives. The good thing I found about the Bridgestone extra soft was that I didn’t lose any distance from the tee and with the soft Ionomer cover I was still happy with the stop I was getting with the shots into the green and those little chip shots around the green.

This was most noticeable on the PGA Catalunya Staduim course with their very fast and tricky greens and as I was also playing from the back tees for filming purposes I needed all the distance I could get.

I enjoyed playing the Bridgestone extra soft ball and at the price it comes in at you are getting a quality golf ball at a great price, but I would also make sure you take the ball fitting, you will be surprised how much a golf ball can affect your game.
