The name Golden Goose always brings a smile to my face. It was one of the first putters I used as a kid, and probably what you used when you made your first putt as a little kid on some crazy golf place on a beach promenade or holiday resort. Now the guys from John Letters have dusted down the design and brought it into the 21st century with a CNC milled face and heal-toe balancing to relive those halcyon days.

I took the Golden Goose GG3 with me out to play in five competition rounds during the Tunisian Festival of Golf. There are three models in the Golden Goose range and I will be testing the original GG1 in a couple of weeks’ time. I love the mallet style of the GG3, it’s a great design and the gold colour really inspires confidence when looking back up at you in the address position.

The greens in Tunisia are very quick, but if you get the right line they’ll run true and this is where the John Letters ‘Roll it’ technology comes into its own. On greens like these, the first couple of inches are vital and what you don’t want is the ball skidding off the face. The GS3 helps me hole some great putts – I feel my best scoring rounds on the two most difficult courses are down to holing some solid putts.

Technology

As mentioned the ‘Roll it’ face technology with the CNC milled face will give you a near-perfect roll off the putter face. All putts will skid – it’s limiting that time before the ball starts to roll that counts, and John Letters have done a great job here.

The 303 stainless steel helps give you great feel and also encourages that CNC milled face get that ball rolling. I also like the tacky limited-edition grip – it inspires confidence that your hands will be steady and true, even in wet weather conditions.

Conclusion

You can’t help but love the Golden Goose. As well as jogging great memories this new version is ready to create some new ones for you. I love the feel and weight of the putter, and in an area where confidence is key I find the GG3 offers everything you’d want. I recommend you give it a go and start updating those memories.

Go and have some fun.
