Most of you will know by now that I am a bit of a blade lover, and as I open the box and pull out TaylorMade’s new Tour Preferred MB Irons I’m struck by the sheer simplicity and beauty of the muscle back design. But what gets me even more excited is that Taylormade have incorporated the KBS shaft and I can’t wait to test these bad boys out.

There’s double excitement for me as I pull into the Steamsong resort. Not only am I going to play a course that I’ve heard so much about, but I feel this is truly a fitting place to play my first round of golf with TaylorMade’s MBs. But my hopes are dashed as a storm sweeps in and I have to wait until tomorrow to get out there and hit some balls.

As I stand on the practice ground taking the plastic protection from the grips and line-up to hit my first couple of shots with the 9-iron, the top line at address looks perfect and the round teardrop design of the blade exudes confidence as it sits behind the ball. If I didn’t know better I swear I could hear it whisper: hit me! I send my first five shots out and the sound and feel are all I expect and more, with a solid thump and that swooshing sound as the ball cuts through the morning air with power and presence.

Technology:

Taylormade have used a soft 1025 carbon steel in their precision-forged process and this is where you get that feeling you are at one with the club; the joy of that pure strike in your hands and the ‘Tom & Jerry’ hands when you catch it wrong. It’s all there, in all its glory.

The R&D guys seem to have gone through every minute detail – every curve and line flows smoothly into the next, flowing from the top-line into the toe and into the hosel – and these are all continually checked and shape-gauged right throughout the production process.

The milled grooves give the MBs all the spin into the green you need, and with the precision-shaped sole with its reduced camber, help give you the confidence to control the ball from the rough.

The blades are then finished with a hand-polished satin finish and come with the excellent KBS Tour steel shaft as standard.

Conclusion:

After playing with these beauties over nine rounds of golf, in rainstorms, gusting winds and the Florida heat, they came out the other end with flying colours. The MBs certainly look fantastic but they also have the feel, strike, power, control and forgiveness to back up those looks. I believe these are the best blades TaylorMade have ever produced, but then you’ll know that as soon as you hit a few balls yourself.

In the market for a set of blades or want to update your existing ones? You need to put TaylorMade’s MBs on your testing list now.
