The Asia course was in pristine condition and the players were delighted with the way the course was set up, the pin positions were challenging but fair and the weather, a blistering 35 degrees, sorted the wheat from the chaff. For a tour that is in its infancy, this being the third tour event, attracting 56 competitors from across Europe is no mean feat and testaments to the high regard the Gecko Euro Pro Tour is held.

The up and coming youngster Ignacio Papp lead the field after Day 1 with a four-under score shooting 68, which was a great score on the day. San Roque professional Philipp Genev finished 3 behind, shooting a 1 under par 71 and a group of three players were on 3 over par shooting 75s.

Daniel Westermark, winner of the Gecko Euro Pro Tourís debut event, made the early move on day two, opening his round with back-to-back birdies, but a three putt at the 7th cost him dearly.

The first round leader Ignacio Papp looked very solid, birdying the 292 yard 2nd to move to 5 under par. Philipp Genev was also playing some great golf, he opened up with a birdie on the 2nd and then finished off the front nine with back-to-back birdies on the 8th and 9th moving him to within 3 shots of the leader.

The back 9 was all Ignacio, par golf meant the challengers had to find birdies, but on a course that many players found difficult there was surely only going to be one winner. A bogey at the long par 3, 17th was followed by a closing birdie on the 389 yard 18th for another 68 and a tournament total of 136, 8 under par and the winner by six shots.

Philipp Genev came 2nd, with Antequerra professional Antonio Bueno and Daniel Westermark sharing third place. The winning Amateur Team on Day 1 was lead by Nilesh Patel winning 300euro of vouchers to use at La Cala Resort

The Gecko Euro Pro Tour again proved itís not all about the professionals, but a breeding ground for young talent, with great scores being shot by Juniors and future golf stars, Vikas Patel, Ayush Patel and Sara Garcia

Last, but not least, a big thanks to all the team at La Cala Resort led by Gary Ford, who made everyone feel very welcome and the support of the Fundación Seve Ballesteros (fundacionseveballesteros.com).

Next stop Monte Mayor 9th August.
